Clinical neuropsychology is a specialty profession in which the brain function is evaluated by objectively testing memory and thinking skills. The clinical neuropsychologist conducts evaluation, makes recommendations and, in some cases, provides treatment, such as cognitive rehabilitation, behavior management, or psychotherapy.
Neuropsychological evaluation is a procedure with a unique purpose. It can be used to reveal or diagnose brain dysfunction when no structural brain abnormalities can be seen on CT or MRI scans.
After the evaluation, the psychologist generates a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation report. This report consists of all the patient’s relevant history (obtained during the intake interview at the first appointment), the results of the testing in narrative and data formats, a diagnosis section, and recommendations for further treatment which will be instrumental in bringing about a favorable prognosis for the patient.
To find possible problems with the patient’s brain functioning
• To define patient’s brain-related strengths and weaknesses
• To guide treatment for the patient’s personal, educational or vocational needs
• To document possible changes in the patient’s functioning over time
